Apatite occurs frequently in the crystals of hydrothermal origin in pegmatites and veins. It may be rock-forming in beds of great extent; as nodular concretions in clays and shales; conglomeritic.

The primary use for apatite is as a fertiliser as a source of phosphorus. When transparent it is used as a gemstone.

It is occasionally found to contain significant amounts of rare-earth elements and can be used as an ore for those metals.
